At NameCrane, we take the security and availability of your data seriously. Our CraneMail infrastructure is protected by a multi-layered backup strategy designed to protect against both hardware failure and accidental data loss.
Are my emails backed up?
Yes. We maintain comprehensive local and offsite backups for all CraneMail accounts.
Local Backups (Snapshots)
We perform high-frequency ZFS snapshots directly on the email servers every 5 minutes. We retain a snapshot rotation of:
- 12 x 5 minute snapshots
- 24 Hourly snapshots
- 30 Daily backups
- 3 Monthly backups
Offsite Backups
Every night, your data is synced to our dedicated backup datacenter. This facility is isolated and used solely for data redundancy.
Data Encryption & Security
To ensure the privacy and security of your communications, all email and account data is fully encrypted:
- Encryption at Rest: Data is encrypted while stored on both our active CraneMail servers and our dedicated backup infrastructure.
- Encryption in Transit: All data movement between our production nodes and the backup datacenter is performed over secure, encrypted connections.
Can I download a full backup?
While we maintain internal backups for disaster recovery, we do not currently provide a one-click tool to download a full account backup archive, yet (it is a project we are actively working on).
Free Feature: CraneMail Archiving
For added protection against accidental deletion, we provide a built-in Email Archiving function for free.
- How it works: The server keeps an additional local copy of all incoming and outgoing messages.
- Restoration: A Domain Administrator can search the archive and restore deleted messages directly via the SmarterMail interface.
